The Saint John City Market on Charlotte Street is the oldest farmer's market in Canada. The market's roof is shaped like an inverted hull of a ship, a testament to the city's shipbuilding history. A stroll through the market is a true sensory experience, with stalls of produce, fresh fish, meats, cheeses, flowers and prepared foods lining the building.
Local Transportation
Prior to the opening of Saint Lawrence Seaway (1959), Port St John functioned as winter cargo port for Montreal when shipping was unable due to ice in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and St Lawrence River. The port fell into decline after the seaway opening (officially in 1959) and the beginning of year-round icebreaker ship support services in the 1960s. Part of the Hopewell Rocks experience is a beach walk along the ocean’s floor among the flowerpot-like formations.
Due to the extreme tidal range of the Bay of Fundy, the base of the formations are covered in water twice a day. However, it is possible to view the formations from ground level at low tide. You can walk on the harbor Passage from both cruise docking locations to the Reversing Falls. Another quirk of this taxi system is that you do not necessarily have exclusive use of the taxi. The driver is allowed to pick up and drop off another fare while you are in the taxi.
From historic landmarks to coastal wonders, our curated guide ensures you experience the best of this iconic Canadian port. Experience the hustle and bustle of North America's oldest continuing farmers' market.
